On 2 February 2012, 393 Members of the European Parliament voted against the Commission proposal for several nutrition claims to be included in the Annex of the Claims Regulation's (EC) 1924/2006 list of permitted nutrition claims. The MEPs voted in favour of the Motion for a Resolution against the modification of the Nutrition Claims Annex. The Commission proposal concerns the following nutrition claims:
- “No added sodium/salt” – new claim
- “Now contains X % less” (energy and macronutrients) – new claim
- "Reduced [name of the nutrient]" – revised conditions of use
It seems that the most problematic point was the claim ‘now X% less’, in particular, for sugar.
The European Commission will now have to decide whether to submit a new proposal.
